CHÂTEAU DE LAROQUE-DES-ALBÈRES

Laroque-des-Albères Castle is first mentioned in 1100. In 1172, it stood at the heart of the fortified market town, as was often the case in the 12th century. In 1188, it is mentioned as a count’s stronghold, which may indicate that it came under the control of the Count of Roussillon. In 1285, Jaume I, King of Majorca, sought refuge there. His ally, Philip IV, King of France, also stayed there. From the end of the 13th century onwards, Laroque became a stronghold forming part of the territory’s defences. In 1422, the castle passed into private ownership. On the night between Good Friday and Holy Saturday 1890, the keep, then some 25 metres high, collapsed without causing any major damage. In 2006, the castle ruins underwent partial restoration. From the viewing point, the panorama stretches out over the Mediterranean coast, the Albères mountains and the Roussillon plain. The tower is not open to visitors.
