Discover Rocamadour

Rocamadour is built in successive tiers that cling to a cliff overlooking the Alzou canyon. The site is a miracle of balance which hosts another miracle, the Black Madonna, who attracted thousands of pilgrims in the Middle Ages.

Now, it's your turn to let the aura of the Rocamadour sanctuaries—the town's living legends—and of its indestructibly beautiful houses, wash over you.

Must-see

Rocamadour, listed as one of the “plus beaux villages de France” (most beautiful villages in France), is a major site in the Lot department, at the heart of the Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park. Discover its highlights.

In Rocamadour, you'll enjoy:

  • Climbing up to the top of the fortified town to Rocamadour Castle, to enjoy an exceptional view over the roofs of the town and Alzou Canyon.
  • Buying a few delicious AOC Rocamadour cabécous (goat cheese) and eating them on the spot.
  • Counting the number of steps of the monumental stairway that leads to the sanctuaries (over 200?) ... and the number of churches to visit once you reach the top (2, 3, 7?).
  • Examining the Black Madonna, in Notre-Dame chapel, to understand the spiritual spell she still seems to cast.
