Vézénobres and the fig An old story… The trade of dried figs would have started in Vézénobres from the 14th century thanks to the flow of the Regordane road through which merchants, soldiers and pilgrims passed. For several centuries, the inhabitants of the village dried the figs harvested at the end of August/beginning of September, under the covered terraces of the houses, the “calaberts”, facing south. Still existing, although often closed and transformed into living rooms, these terraces protected the fruits from the first rains or autumn mists. On 30 November, during the fair of Saint Andrew (the patron saint of the village), several tons of dried figs were sold. 1997 saw the “Fig Fair” revived. In 2017, this event will take place on Sunday 1st October. The Fig Tree Conservatory Orchard In 2000, the municipality welcomes on a 2.5 hectare site, the duplication of part of the fig tree collection of the National Botanical Conservatory of Porquerolles. A collection of a thousand trees offering a hundred different varieties is presented. The aim of the orchard is to protect and perpetuate the biodiversity of the numerous varieties, to study, describe and propagate them. To discover the fig tree, ten educational panels, hidden in the heart of the orchard, reveal the different varieties planted here. A space dedicated to figs You can discover an exhibition “History of figs and fig trees” which retraces the botany, cultivation and use of this emblematic fruit species of the Mediterranean. Nine panels focus on the diversity of varieties, in particular the varieties present in the conservatory orchard of Vézénobres. To complete this presentation, a sketch depicting the fruit drying on racks or hanging along a rope has been reconstructed and some photos of the figs in the orchard are on display.* Practical information Free access to the orchard, documentation at the tourist information office.* Free entrance to the orchard and the exhibition.* Restaurants prepare dishes around the fig and our craftsmen carve the fig leaf or the fig in pottery. * Downloadable map* Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
