CHÂTEAU DE CASSAIGNE

CASSAIGNE , Gers – Cultural heritage

About

At the heart of the Great Site « Armagnac, Abbey and Cities », discover a site that should not be missed in Gascony: the Castle of Cassaigne.
Ideal stop in the heart of Gascony, 6 km away from Condom (3,7 mi.), 5 km from the Abbey of Flaran (3,1 mi.) and 35 minutes away from Auch, the castle of Cassaigne is an extraordinary heritage site

Cassaigne’s vineyard is closely linked to its prestigious 15th-century castle, historical property of the bishops of Condom. Surrounded by more than 30 ha (74 ac) of grapevines, the Armagnac production made this home famous so it has now reached the high spheres of the Côtes de Gascogne wines.

The castle, built in the 13th century on a strategic location by Montassin de Goalad, abbot of Condom, underwent many transformations over the centuries. The building remained the propriety of Condom’s bishops, who turned it into their country home until the French Revolution. In 1819, Bertrand Duviard, surgeon in Cassaigne from father to son since the middle of the 16th century, bought it. His descendants are still the owners today.

The current facade inspires peace and serenity through its classical lines and harmonious proportions. The austere 13th-century walls support the Renaissance building presenting various mullions and balconies added in the 19th century.
Tour freely the Castle exhibition telling the history and the techniques used for the production of Armagnac. The oldest castle room, whose ceiling is held by three round arches, was converted into one of the Armagnac aging cellars as soon as the 18th century – you can visit it. You can also see a film about grapevines and test your sense of smell with a “scent organ”.

The old 16th-century kitchen shows a surprising brick vault, built like a baker’s oven. The walk ends with a tasting of the estate production, also for sale in the castle shop. Price: 2,50 € per person.

Guided tour « Wine and Armagnac » at the castle of Cassaigne: we shall start our visit telling the castle history before going on a tour of our vineyard in order to discover the soils and local grape variety such as Manseng Noir, Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Baco … We will then head towards the castle grounds and the Armagnac aging cellar for an explanation on the principle behind distillation. Finally, a unique experience awaits you in the old 16th-century kitchen: a commented tasting of 4 wines and 2 Armagnac from the Castle of Cassaigne (12-year-old and vintage wines). Duration: 1h30, price 20€ per person. Activity available all year long from Monday to Saturday, at 10:00 and 15:00, by reservation (tour is confirmed with a minimum of 6 people). Information and booking with Justine, wine specialized tour guide 07 72 13 92 00 or visites@plaimont.fr
