MONASTERE ET CALVAIRE DU MONT ARES
NESTIER , Hautes-Pyrénées – Cultural heritage
About
As early as the Gallo-Roman period, a temple dedicated to Ares was built at the foot of the hill. It would have been destroyed by the Vandals in the 5th century. Stones from this temple are embedded in the wall of the present church. In 1989, the site was registered as a Historic Monument and recognized as a Masterpiece in Danger
An open-air theatre adjoining the old monastery completes the site. In 1880, Olivetan monks from St Bertrand de Comminges started a monastery but had to flee the first anti-segregation laws before the end of the work. In 1943, a wooden cross was erected at the top of Mount Arès
The Théâtre de Verdure has access for people with reduced mobility. Traduction automatique par DeepL via DATAtourisme
